International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras

From 4-7 November 2014 Lorenzo Porzi present the technology used in the panorARma VENTURI 3rd year AR demo Experience to augment pictures of mountainous landscapes with geo-referenced data at ACM/IEEE International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras (ICDSC 2014) in Venice (Italy).
His oral presentation was heard during the Mobile and Embedded Vision session concerning the image-to-DEM registration algorithm. Afterwards, he also participated to the PhD Forum with a presentation on sensor fusion for Android.

Between the 1st and 5th of September, Lorenzo Porzi from FBK presented a paper on “Personalizing a Smartwatch-based Gesture Interface with Transfer Learning” at the European Signal Processing Conference. The paper was presented in the Signal Processing Applications poster session, and described a system where a Smartwatch can be exploited to provide hands-free interaction through arm gestures with an assistive application running on a Smartphone. This system advanced the gesture recognition technology used in the VENTURI 2nd year demonstrator with a transfer learning-based personalization algorithm.

New PDR standards initiative

In the first weeks of April 2014, Jacques Lemordant from Université Joseph Fourier (linked to partner INRIA) traveled to Osaka City University in Japan to help create an International working group focused on indoor navigation and PDR benchmarking (this initiative came from the efforts of VENTURI). Together with Takeshi Kurata (AIST, Tuskuba), Koji Makita (AIST, Tuskuba) and Daisuke Yoshida (OCU) they aim to propose a standard format for Pedestrian Dead Reckoning.

Pervasive Computing and Communications

Between the 24th and 28th March 2014, Håkan Jonsson (from Sony) presented his paper on “Proximity-based reminders using Bluetooth” at the IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications, Budapest (Hungary). Håkan demonstrated the Memorit application and how it has been used for data collection that in turn has been used in the development of the Proximates social context engine.

Workshop on Pervasive and Context-Aware Middleware

On the 3rd December 2013, Håkan Jonsson from Sony presented a paper entitled “Proximates: A social context engine” and some initial results from applications and user studies at the 3rd International Workshop on Pervasive and Context-Aware Middleware, Dublin (Ireland).

State of the Map 2013

From 6th-8th September 2013, Jacques Lemordant, Thibaud Michel and Mathieu Razafimahazo from VENTURI partner INRIA, presented two scientific papers at the State of the Map 2013 conference in Birmingham, UK. Jacques Lemordant gave a presentation on “Customizable Interactive Audio Rendering of OSM Maps” to participants of the conference. This presentation highlights the potential of OSM in AR applications with accent on how to use audio to make application more immersive. Three examples were given corresponding to the VENTURI 1st year demonstrator, 2nd-year demonstrator show casing navigation of blind people and the 3rd-year demonstrator targeting augmented cities. In another session, Thibaud Michel gave a presentation on “OSM and micro mobility: mapping with scooters”.
This presentation showed how is it possible to model indoor buildings and mainly why it’s important for Visually Impaired people (which was linked to the 2nd-year VENTURI demonstrator).

At NetSci2013, held during 3rd – 7th June 2013 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Håkan Jonsson of Sony Mobile Communications presented a poster on the subject “A comparison of Facebook friendship and physical proximity” which contained results on understanding user’s context. The topic of integrating the user’s context in the AR scenario will play an important in the VENTURI demonstrator of year 3.
