Augmented Planet 2012
October 30th – 31st 2012, London, UK
Attendee: Paul Chippendale
Augmented Planet is the UK’s largest augmented reality conference. Taking place over 2 days, the conference provides a unique insight into the development, opportunities and benefits of augmented reality. This conference brings together industry advocates, technology providers and brands looking to learn more about the future of augmented reality.
On the afternoon of the second day, as an invited speaker, Paul was given the opportunity to present his thoughts about how the AR community can help to drive the evolution of future mobile platforms in a talk entitled “Co-evolution of Future AR Mobile Platforms” (pdf, 2.0M). In this presentation Paul explained how the research topics being addressed in VENTURI are helping to drive advances in the AR capabilities of the next generation Ericsson Smart-phones and Tablets. In addition to giving a live demonstration of Visual SLAM using the audience and an ad-hoc 3D target (demo created by metaio and running on an iPad), Paul showed three videos which illustrated some early VENTURI results, namely outdoor 3D Building tracking (on YouTube), early work on 3D Terrain tracking (avi, 3.5M), and the Year1 AR gaming use-case (on YouTube).

VENTURI Kick-off

October 26th, 2011 No comments

On the 13th and 14th of October 2011 the kick-off meeting for the VENTURI project was held at Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento, Italy. The meeting was an opportunity for all of the partners to get to know one another and meet face-to-face to discuss the project’s goals and challenges.

Over the two days, there was a great deal of enthusiasm and a sense of excitment. We see the challenges laid out in VENTURI, i.e making Augmented Reality a reality for everyone, as being cutting edge issues that could really have a large impact on peoples lives. In addition to our partnership with the French and German Institutes for the blind, whom will help us to explore 3D audio AR, we will also dive into AR topics like navigation, tourism guide and gaming.

To summarise, we all went away from the meeting as a VENTURI team sharing the same vision.
