ISMAR 2012

November 20th, 2012 No comments

At ISMAR 2012 (Nov 5-8, Atlanta Ga, USA), Selim BenHimane (metaio) hosted a demo area dedicated to the VENTURI City game.

The demo presented a multi-player Augmented Reality game that takes place on a table-top. The players have to accomplish a set of missions in the city (deliveries in a limited time, fire extinguishing, etc.). The real-time visual localization employed in this demo was based on the tracking partly described in the ISMAR 2012 paper by Kurz et al. “Representative Feature Descriptor Sets for Robust Handheld Camera Localization”. The demo ran on the experimental prototype mobile platforms from ST Ericsson. The system showcased sensor-aided markerless feature-based tracking. The virtual appearance of the city was geometrically reconstructed in an offline stage for the correct handling of occlusions. A continuous communication between the mobile platforms permitted multi-player interaction.

This demo is the result of the first step in the project that consists of the integration of the technology, the software and the hardware to showcase an indoor multi-player AR game.

Demo at ECCV 2012

November 9th, 2012 No comments

During this year’s European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV), Valeria Tomaselli from STMicroelectronics presented a VENTURI related demo during the demo session on the 10th and 11th of October in Florence, Italy. In this demo she talked about a scene recognition engine working on a Smartphone. The engine exploits an image representation directly obtainable in the IGP of mobile devices. The demo works in real-time and it is able of discriminating among different classes of scenes: e.g. Tall Building, Inside City, Street, Highway, Coast, Open Country, Mountain and Forest.

Klas Hermodsson (Sony mobile) presenting VENTURI demo at insideAR 2012

Every year, metaio, one of the VENTURI partners, organizes the insideAR conference. insideAR is entirely dedicated to the latest trends of Augmented Reality and the 2012 edition was held in Munich, Germany on October 1st and 2nd. The VENTURI consortium was present with a dedicated stand in the exhibition area, presenting the first year VENTURI demo.

Description of the demo

The demo presents a multi-player Augmented Reality Game that takes place on a table-top 0.8m x 0.8m miniature city platform. The players have to accomplish a set of missions in the city (deliveries in a limited time, etc.). The system performs 3D sensor-aided markerless feature-based tracking. The environment has been geometrically reconstructed in an offline stage for the correctly handling of occlusions as well as for the real-time 3D markerless tracking routine. The demo is running on an experimental prototype mobile platforms from ST Ericsson. The continuous communication between the mobile platforms also permits multi-player interaction.
