Workshop on Image and Audio Analysis for Multimedia Interactive Services
Telecom ParisTech, Paris,
France
3-5 July 2013

WIAMIS 2013, the Workshop on Image and Audio Analysis for Multimedia Interactive Services, is a major event in the multimedia community, offering the possibility for researchers and developers to exchange ideas on issues linked to interactive services. This 14th edition, paid particular emphasis to audio analysis and audio-driven multimedia analysis research.

On the second day of the workshop, from 15:30 – 17:00 in the EU project demo session, Paul Chippendale presented a live VENTURI interactive demonstration which attracted a great deal of interest from the attendees.

It illustrated the integration of results coming from the first steps of the project and consisted of a software and hardware technology showcase woven into the form of an AR game experience on a table-top 0.8m x 0.8m miniature city. One player has to accomplish a set of missions (i.e. burger deliveries in a limited time), by steering a virtual car with a mobile AR device through the real city. Spatial 3D audio effects add to the immersive experience of the game, The demonstration showed state-of-the-art real time markerless 3D tracking on a mobile device. In order to deliver a ‘nailed down’ AR experience, the pose (or 6 -DOF) of the device, with respect to the 3D city model, is estimated at 20fps. Visual feature extraction/tracking and advanced hardware sensor data fusion algorithms were exploited to provide a high level of robustness and performance.
